EPISTLE FROM THE KILLING FIELDS

(In memory of two Palestinian youths I befriended some time before one and half decades in Jeddah whose names I can't recall. Those who became silent as their colleagues animatedly discussed going back home for vacation. For my Face book friends Samirah Naim Khoury who share truths about Palestine reality, and Artist Fateh Gabin who reminds that still there are beautiful dreams there. The film Papa-2 by Gopal Menon on the plight of Kashmiri mothers searching their disappeared sons, and poet Gaddar's words on mothers who came to the agitation front demanding their sons vanished in the name of 'Naxallite hunt' in Thelingana also have inspired the poem.)

My friend, you ask me:
How in this land that smells of blood
from the killing fields
we still speak of flowers,
love the moon and the stars,
graze our white horses
in river basins and lush valleys,
and how under green bowers
our fulsome beauties
give ear to lyrics laden with love suits.

You cannot guess:
when our skies would be pierced
by bomber jets;
at which moment our tender kids,
on a trot with grasshoppers,
would be blasted into pieces;
when their armored vehicles
would rain death into
gatherings at our dinner tables;
and where they vanish into:
our full-blooded handsome youths.

My friend,
They call it war, yet it’s but slaughter.

They don’t spare  even fledgling in the womb;
our venerable sires are trampled
under their boots;
our grannies, descendents of Shehrezad
are being silenced
under their military might.

You ask me:
how we still sing our songs,
share our loves, and weave our dreams.

Yes,
This is the secret of our legacy,
our resistance as old as the earth.

Our poets:
they are not worshippers of
bubbling wine glasses in
air-conditioned havens.
Their poetry is born in
uncertainties of exile.
Our loves are no glass houses
meditating happy endings.
As  country beckons, we answer
even in secret moments of the nuptials.

See my friend, it still blooms in our valley:
those fragrant flowers.
Heart-colored apples and
golden apricots are still ripening
in our groves.
Our brooks are still running full
in crystal-clear streams.
Our agile horses and gorgeous herds
are still happy with
abundance of their grazing fields.

One day
their kids would question them:
Why did you decimate those
who were to be born with us?
Why did you incur the curse
of their mothers upon us?
That day,
kids on either side of the barricades
would kiss each other’s cheeks.
They would sing, hand in hand,
new songs of joy over
finding their missing kin
they would dance together in these streets;
the male kids on either side
would extend hands of courtship
towards the girls on the other side.
That day,
they would return:
those who died for us,
those who stirred in our veins
our cherished dreams.

അവര്‍ വെറുതെ വിടുന്നില്ല;
ഞെരിഞ്ഞമരുന്നുണ്ട്;
നിശബ്ദരാകുന്നുണ്ട് ;

സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്ന പളുങ്ക് കൊട്ടാരമല്ല;

UNTO THESE STILLED WAVES

Whirlpool of the mind:
a fiery furnace-
fire-dancing images
refusing to take shape

My god, dying young,
sprouting satanic horns,
failed me, fades out,
His men, those ageless seers,
they reached nowhere
leading demented multitudes:
vicious, vacuous, vainglorious.

Sitting on the shores of time
I wait fishing, my angle
to the waters of immemorial seas
wherein I swam so many lives.
What are those finned giants,
looting away my catch?
They too were my comrades once.

As I lay resting on the sheen of moon
nestling my dreams in limitless skies
down below, they beckon me-
those cloudy branches with earthly roots
where my desperate pals found last exit:
Soar not too high, reach not for the stars,
for you might melt your waxen wings!.

Sweating my way into arid planes
where no dream sprouts life:
Nightmare for a kenophobe.
Back  to my oppressive den
facing shadows long forsaken
its but claustrophobic.
Caught nowhere I am but wind-blown.

Drenched in rains of visions diverse,
timeless rivers of ruminations
where they clash by day in, day out:
those masters of wisdom fathomless-
an intrigued witness, mute, over-awed
by and by desperate, sinking,
I lay afloat on familiar waves.

RETURN OF THE UNBORN

I.
Abandoned under cover
of smoggy moonbeams and shadows
under a stinking suburban culvert
on a drizzling summer night:
a new-born, with no swaddling clothes.
Inaudible squeals lost among stridulating crickets.

Next day, she made it into tiny columns
in local news papers, nay,
what was left of her by
scavenging nocturnal predators:
the nomadic mother reportedly missing.

 Found in rude encasing
in a crowded public carriage:
another three days’ old, stilled at birth
with no maternal tear.
She too would hit columns.

Statistics, staggering figures:
what befell those conceived before
sends a chill in every female seed.
An awful line of butchers waiting
to catch first inkling of her life
turning womb to her sepulcher.

II.

They shall turn up one day-
All those fetal female kids
choked within in prime!

I see them swarming villages
suburbs cities capitals hospital
waiting rooms garbage heaps
beauty parlors, and, you name it,
dripping blood and puss, drooping
limbs half-formed, half-eaten in
fetus feast for stray dogs.

They would inquire of each and sundry
on how they earned their fate.

They would question Him, who,
on a playful second round,
carved his first artefact’s rib
into a fragile fairy
thriving only in his colossal shade:
why she was burdened with
luring him into hot sun.

They would question those law-givers,
eager to oblige patriarchal pride,
cited tradition and decreed her
servility from womb to tomb.
They knew the game, deified her,
sealed her under divine silence.

They would question inspired redeemers
who, saving her from burial alive,
still buried her alive in systems
run by men, in lands of sandstorms.
A game given façade of protection
to procure servility under the veil.

III.

They wouldn’t spare-

        those cloistered masters, loathing
her freedom, demonized and hounded
her unto the stake;

        those elders wielding power
decreed her doom in the name of honor;

       those refined poets
humoring battle of the sexes
failed not to find fault with her.

They shall definitely burn your siesta
pelting wrath of the unborn
in fiery storms of dementing curses
no generations to come would escape.

They shall surely have their day when,
alien wombs you hire for your seed
refuse to simulate your fathers,
begetting offsprings you can’t claim.

തോളത്ത് ചാരിയവള്‍ നിന്നു;

SING NO DIRGES IN LOVERS’ WORLD

She leans on his shoulder
as the gentle waves lapping
on to the shore wet their feet:
A picture –perfect love

Young minds love calm seas,
even as love sends tremors inside.
Young lovers dream blue skies
even as passion shrouds it in clouds

Let not giant waves that swept away
domains of love, life and dreams
at odd hours of the night
strangle their dreams
with nightmare hands.

Let them stay blessed in ignorance
where they hear mermaids singing.
Don’t tell them it’s choked gasps
of shipwrecked sailors
in water-worlds of no return.

Let not the shamed mermaid, who,
on lovers’ day, chose to go hiding
in the bottom of the waves,
discolor those rainbows
vibrant in their hearts.

Let not the kid, building sand castles,
taken away by the waves
into realms of crystal streams beneath
lure them
into perilous longings.

Let not those riders to the sea, seeking living,
disappeared in crevices of waves,
beckon them into unsettling visions
no loving hearts
ever longed to behold.

Build for them a bower
roofed with rainbows,
lit by fireflies,
and fanned by butterflies

Sing for them tunes
woven by nightingales
in lands of eternal spring
where dirges are unheard.

JOKES IN THE CORRIDORS

It might bloom in the corridor
idling in loneliness:
a red red rose.

It might cast in a salad mind
at a winding staircase:
a mighty magnetic spell

A hesitant moment, demure eyes
blood surging to cheeks:
your dream is done.

Burning sleepless
smitten by the feverish thirst
days reduced to moments
your eyes searching in vain:
your femme fatale.

And yet-
aisles would go overcrowded
and staircases, to morgues;
where roses fade away,
trampled, nay, traded,
or, worse, strangled.

And now-
As you bask at putrid shores
of time, being through
thunderstorms of amorous days,
thinking of no roses to bloom
why time chose to rattle you
into a dreary stupid joke?

A new apparition of the diva
silhouetted against the ugly door
of a stuffy corridor
a creaking staircase led you in,
a stinking house dealing in
emergency love*.

Heavily made-up face where
cheap rose powder mixes with
nauseating stench of halitosis:
marks the last lover left behind.

Now you could sleep becalmed.

(Based on two true incidents: one, in which a young friend of mine was bitten by the thunderbolt of infatuation on a winding staircase, never to see her again; and two, what an old syphilitic acquaintance whose life curiously resembled that of Florentino Arizo narrated)
*(The expression “emergency love” is from Garcia Marquez’s Love in the Times of Cholera, wherein Florentino Arizo is the protagonist.)
