TO THOSE WHO BEHEAD CHILDREN

Land forsaken after slaughters
Are occupied by wild growth
Vegetating every cranny-
That’s how no man’s lands
Became primeval forests.

Blood for clover fields,
Pearly teeth for lily white,
Flowing locks for gushing streams
Chapped fingers for thorn bush-

When you chop of new-borns’ heads
Don’t forget to sprinkle some salt
Lest the oceans that stem from
Wilderness to – be
Would taste salt-less.
No dead sea can stand it.

NOT FOR THE SHEPHERD

(For the childhood of animal fables)

The shepherd arrived
At the cave entrance
In search of the lost lamb.
There, ancestors lay interred
In immemorial urns.
Metals shards and stone pieces
Lay scattered,
Marking ages -
He discovers nothing.

Footprints of the tiger
That went inside
Had torn his heart.
Would the sharp fangs
Have pierced the tender flesh?
Beyond the darkness of
Primordial monuments,
Sleep-walking through
The smell of antiquity,
In the magic mirror of prayers
He beholds it thus:
Beyond the heart of darkness
In the green planes of morning rays,
A blind-man’s buff on.

May he not wake up
Into the dampness of clotted blood !.
What's better for the shepherd
To behold
If not the tiger and the lamb

Gamboling together !

POET OF SITUATIONS

POET OF SITUATIONS

As fledglings caught in wildfire
perched in the poem
mother bird brushes its beak
against poet's fingers.

As drowned companion
and fisherman lost in the seas
resurrect in verse
salt water soaks his bosom.

Childhood nodding to granny tales
and youthful quest of camaraderie
join in dance of metaphors
to turn through leaves
of variegated colors
in the book of life.

Expectations of love
and sighs of rejection
throb in lines
clouding rainbows.

Paying poetic homage
to mother who proceeded
from ventilator to white shroud
and father who didn't wake up
one fine morning,
son's shadow lends him myopic.

When he baptizes her,
the ravaged, in verse,
his daughter burns in fever.

As furnace-like streets of hate
emit smell of burning flesh,
poet's sepulcher catch fire.

Settling scores with rotten age,
poet puts on sheep skin
to snow peaks of compromise.

BEYOND THE DUNGEON, BEYOND THE RIVER.

I shall have a dungeon
for the moment of sleep-walking.
I would commence my odyssey
with no fore-fear of call back.
I don't need fingers of the wakeful
to serve as pointers for me.
What could they possibly say
about ways they never saw!

Beyond that dazzled first step
signal fires would shed light
unto the inner eyes of closed lids.
Goblins would wait for me
with treasures of magical visions.
That charmed lad in festive throngs
would be back, wide eyed,
his zest, leading like father's finger.
Way-side vendors
would return my juvenile days.
Jingling bells, whistling loud,
I would buy back everything.
I would pilfer a glass bangle
for the play-mate on swing-wing.

In the spring of vital stats
a rainbow would spread wide
as blushing cheeks of the mistress.
Benevolent fore-fathers
who vanished in season changes,
mates beyond the river of death,
they would come by in dream lanes.
This dungeon would keep in store
all that life never offered.

And in the end,
in that moment of temptation,
learning that secret
that forbids back-glance,
I would embark that ferry.
Beyond the river of forgetfulness
lies the land of no return.

GOD WHO WON'T RESURRECT

GOD WHO WON'T RESURRECT

Once again
the night of this sacred birth.
In the glass windows-
diagrams of snow.

Though proclaimed overzealously,
serpentine scroll news
spread burning into
fleeting life of memories
in the branches of visions,
hissing of the venomous
in the wings of hearing.

She who awaits death-on-cross
of troubled times
hanging on
the smouldering tip of life,
the sacred hunters
who sailed back,
being blessed by traitors,
into night revelries-

There are unproclaimed tragedies,
though of eternal origins,
that wail to air, weep to rain
and burn with the sun:
those remained untouchables
in the elite spheres of news-making.

One at the street corner
who served her flesh
till the night ended,
a new germination
inside the tribal lass
with unknown genetics,
body of an aboriginal
smelling ganja and harsh liquor.

Crossing royal highways,
valleys and mountains-
the forsaken tribal god,
denied of offerings.
For a people with no resurrection:
a god with no resurrection.

(The poem was written on the Christmas eve, when the mass-rape victim in Delhi was struggling for her life and news of the two Italian culprits making it easy to go back home was creating public outrage. )

DREAM GRANNY - A DEDICATION.

As I lay awake on the cot
in the corner of the hut
where it leaked in least,
listening to rain's symphony
beating the thatched roof,
my granny's feather-touch pat
fondling my baby-cheeks,
I saw them, my unseen elfish pals,
swinging on the tip of her rainbow tales,
criss-crossing my dreams.
They would walk me my days
as starved child of a hungry home.

As I sat idling in the shade
of the ancient mango tree
sprawling outside home,
leaning on to her fragile form
looking at the burning sun
beating the village lanes,
her familiar odor exuding love,
I saw them, my proud ancestors,
reaching out to me in her thin voice,
brightening my inner vision.
They would walk me my years
as unhappy youth of a betrayed land.

Now, I have no rainbows
to hang my seraphim dreams on,
nor such lullaby-soft voice
to invoke ancestral spirits.
Starved am I, but not hungry,
unhappy am I, but not for the land.
As thunderstorm conspires with downpour
I still search for a wrinkled yet
cloud-soft hand to pat me.
As I tread heavy steps out to the sun,
I still hear it soft: sweetheart,
tread calm, the dust is full of them.

AVALANCHES

AVALANCHES

There are unexpected snow-slides:
just like a breath-taking isle
simply vanishing into the sea
in mysterious moves of planet earth;
like an iceberg emerging so suddenly
in a safe ship route.

The golden hue of camaraderie,
the sun-beams of ideologies
transcending time and nations
was cut asunder into continents
of tensions between boarders
through straits of blood.

The one who was companion
during days of oppression,
who begot anger out of embers
was to go down into rotten swamps
of rusted times of no worth.

The sandal cool of friendship
made immaculate as if in a smithy,
helping hand in grief and pain
changed season into indolent silence
of summer nights of unstirring leaves.

In which unintelligible moment
of earth-moves could a hot stream
turn into an avalanche?

Though mysterious,
some season changes would lie
frozen within inner heart.

DROWNED FISHERMAN

The drowned fisherman
has a way back
on the tip of the waves.
It reaches back
not his home
but his woman's heart.
In wee hours of the night
she could still listen to it.
In waves that die out bubbling,
his luminous eyes
would wink at her alone.
Sea gulls would still wrangle
with someone at the zenith of the sea
burning by day.

Sound of bike across sand beach.
A dagger between eye brows-
the micro-finance man.
Hiding behind the hut,
her sobs would merge with waves.

He might be there like Jonas
at the zenith of the blue:
A benevolent sea beast
would carry him in womb.
A rebirth without corporeal decay.
In a spring day
as the tree of life sprouts and blooms
when the moon mix with shade
this ever-serene whale
would deliver him unto land.
His urchins fighting waves
would still wake up into
his midnight calls.

PLATONIC

Day of the depraved:
As the doors close behind
multitudes moving out,
the aged god would limp out
to deserted streets.
With inner eyes of the blind
he would bless the poet:

That loneliness I endured
during days of creation-
now it's all yours.
Behold them
on mountain peaks,
in dense dark new moon,
in flickering sight of
blinding lightning.
Be their shadow on
mad days of routines.
Scribe them
in sweat and blood,
in death and rebirth.

In lives never ordained
its not in prophesies,
but in ship-wrecking uncertainties
I keep treasures for you.

FREEDOM ULTIMATE

They say
children are godsend.
Yet I don't know
which god send her.
Everything began normal:
conception, pains, anticipations.
She alone was different.
It took me a hell of pain
to bring her out;
her large head wouldn't out.
No one was happy.
Neither was my man.
I knew I would be alone.

Even as he left me, my man,
for a better choice,
I didn't feel like giving in.
fighting a lone fight
for one ever so light,
I felt tired at times.
With uncommunicative sounds
just a breathing baggage-
she knew nothing.
I never feared death
for when did I live?
Yet, the baggage I couldn't give up
still did breathe.
Who else would carry it
when I am gone?

Now, after these long years,
she has gone back.
I am free now:
my big freedom.
What do I care
in exercising my freedom?
For , nobody ever cared
for my bondage.

WHAT THE BATS WOULDN'T SAY

Hanging from the attic
they have heard it:
the muffled laughter
of the high-born lass,
lusty gasps,
sobs of poor maids,
the sweeper cursing
for dirtying the floor.

In dark insides
of the run-down inn:
sounds of foot taps-
limping memories.
Night for nobody,
rats running amuck.
A stray beggar
fights them for a sleep.

Outside household,
from the ancient mango tree:
they hear a robber moving sly.
On the palm fronts
hiding from moon beams
night stalkers are on prowl.

From that greasy rose apple tree
at city outskirts
they have seen a lot:
night of the pedophile
under the crumbling bridge,
decaying female life
of the street walker,
shady deals of
fast buck harvest,
blood of the slaughtered.

Transcending sea-roars
of witnessing
baby face bats ceased
talking to humans.

DAY FOR DINOSAURS

They wax eloquent:
the grand old man
who gave his name
unto the clan
was a Titan, nothing less.
Oh, the way he cleaved
this venomous soil
that still remained virgin!*
He was an embodiment
of strength hope foresight
patience endurance courage.
Of brothers he had two,
his younger, not any less.
Of the other, they don't know.
His sisters? They don't know.

Their great grand father,
he was simply awesome.
He knew the secret:
keeping best of companies
having no qualms about it
he let them perish: those
never served his ends.
He was the family founder
of GP** in family wealth.
What of those he trampled
in the way? They don't know.
What of the siblings he threw
in the lurch? They don't know.

Their grand father,
he was quite a statesman.
He was the best of men
for those wielded power.
He was so saintly to see
no difference in white skin.
Yet he was very sensitive
to keep unsullied by locals.
He was the family pride
in fetching that title official.
What of his kith and kin?
They have heard about some.
They are here, equal in status.
The others? They don't know.

Their father, the pivotal one,
all grins, from ear to ear,
you never doubt his caliber!.
How else did he ensure
that each of his brood
stood tall in society?
Oh, don't be so nosy!.
What if they dealt shady?
How can you blame him
if the society goes that way?
Even Aristotle would grand
that man is a social being.

A family gathering is no small thing:
You cynics have no idea
of what effort it takes to hold.
To hell with your nosiness
about silent spots!
Those not in the limelight-
Are we to blame?
We were not born then.
What if they failed for reasons
you and we cannot guess,
right now?
Silent spots do not count
on a day for dinosaurs.

THE OLD MAN STILL WALKS MY DREAMS.

Abed, staring vacant
into engrossing dark night.
Rhythm of heartbeats.
Of drops from old bath tap.
Tud, drip, tud, drip...
I move into shadow lands
of an enervated slumber.
It's been ages, it seems.

Waiting outside the surgical
to perform it urgent,
as the door closed behind,
there hangs a moment
as heavy as the universe.
Muffled sighs, choked sobs-
I alone still see the last look-
a father to his other, his son.
I alone do see it invisible:

that blue bird, unheard wings
passing out of closed doors
through the narrow corridor.
It lingers before me
with never told stories.
I don't need proof to out
as a doctor, out with bowed head,
to spell out, inciting that
terrible common yell.

A soft hand on my forehead,
a soft sound, familiar, yet strange,
“Sleep becalmed, my son!”
I ask him, “Dad, why me?
I never obeyed you.!”
“You fool! You were me.
I never obeyed anyone!”
He was never so soft.

(The last stanza of the poem is greatly influenced by George Herbert's poem "The Collar")

VOLCANOES CREATE A SAGE.

Ever since it erupted in his son
as a fatal genetic disease
my neighbor has gone mute.

His only daughter, tender of age,
died of of the same
a couple of years back.

For days he woke up, sweating
in visions of crumbling bridges.
His son, not yet to his teens,
held his arms.

As the bank people decided
his homestead is not his any more,
his wife learned a new art:
the art of laughing and laughing.

Now, as the boy lay
shrouded in white,
he went mute as a rock.

Now I know how
volcanoes create a sage.

NOTHING SIMULATES

NOTHING SIMULATES

Though of the same tree
all fruits don't share a single tale-
just like leaves.
Leaves falling in leaf-tremors
would find rebirth
on same branch
through a maternal root.
In wind-blown leaves
is the first murmur of wanderings.

Some leaves would be parasol
for worm life under it.
Very few would stand
with the plant to end unto earth.

Those burned of sun,
decayed of rain,
thrown down by naughty kids,
or blown by rascal winds-
would be mother's pain.

Tender fruits reach dining
just as they are to put on weight.
It would spice up dinners.
Some reach vegetable stacks
in street corners
available for bargain.
Those that ripen full
reach mammals' bowels
as if ordained.
Some seeds would find
genes of seers
in entrails of migrating birds.
They would give
exile's life-in-memories
to those extinct at homeland.
Worthy seeds would turn
indifferent stone statues
to debates of reclaiming
citing back-deeds.

It is like that:
Female infant buried
in polythene sack
would give testimony for
maternal love turning deadly.
Seek testimony of life-
from female sediments
in streets of sperm;
the depraved from street
with mind shipwrecked;
or abused kids:

Offsprings of the same mother:
none is like another.

HARD RECKONING

They too flew in rainbow wings-
my own youthful dreams.

There were those who inspired me
with loving blessings:
You too have space in
the horizons of poesy.

There were those
who despaired ever:
we have been looking for you
in every literary havens.

Yet, as I hurriedly ventured my yacht
into the troubled seas
with rebel's prowess,
I forgot my benevolent teachers.

In the death-wish of
one who indulges himself
in curses, I gave up
on my dream- children.
In days to be nurtured
under milk-ducts, they
were bruised by affronts
of the streets.

Now, after decades
I try to take in
my cast-away kids
into my ghost house.

My ghost house, ever afflicted,
overtly and covertly,
by memories of ship-wrecking seas.

Corridors of veins wherein
poison smokes have infested
along with mates of dismal days.

Shades of the schizoid
haunted by slaughters far away
raging as blood streams.

They turn me out as outsider
in apathy of the thrown-outs,
it's not easy: reunion with
those severed long before.

They don't mince words:
exchange value of what I amassed
are of bygone days:
Street-grown are blunt enough.

As I try to regain, in broken lines,
my skies are overwhelmed
by dark clouds of nightmares.
Shrieks tear it up as thunderstorms.

Seeds face feticide
in soil too hard for roots.
The curse of the unborn ever
as undying amber, within.

Who would absolve him,
who has no one to blame?
What is the harshest reckoning
if not what one did to himself?

WAITING FOR AN AUTUMNAL KISS.

You could have been here with me.
As I sit brooding on the shores of time,
looking into the heart of the unknown,
you could have been here with me.

As I lay resurrected first
in the mid-wife's arms,
my mother, still in exhaustion,
kissed me, the kiss of life.
As I lisped first, calling her first,
she kissed me, the kiss of initiation.

As she lay dead, unhappy that
her brood were still fledglings,
I kissed her, my first kiss of loss.

As I did her, my first crush, proud
in the fields, she kissed me in secret;
my first kiss of passion.
As she bade farewell, wedded to another;
I kissed her tears, my kiss of heart-break.

As I held your arms in wed-lock
I kissed you, your eyes closed in submission,
you were me, in a kiss of finding each other.
As we quarreled, parted ways,
I kissed your cold finger tips,
my first kiss of denial.

And now past my spring
wherein you bloomed
in lovely kids and blissful home
I sit on forlorn shores of gloom,
I long for one more kiss.
I know you won't ever come back.
Yet, honey, I want you back.
You could have been here with me
to give me that autumnal kiss,
the kiss of death.
Kiss me to my death, my love.

THE CITY FIGHTS DEMENTIA*

Those ancient buildings
in the city streets-
rusted memories of
centuries washed away.

They are occupied by
mice and little men together.
Would they be hanging around
in corridors of silent night hours-
those who galloped in memories
of the city's bygone past,
spurting blood and sperm?
They would exhale
in the labored breath
of asthmatic inhabitants.
They would limp ahead
in the staggering feet
of the arthritic.
They would become
the subconscious
in fleeting memories
of the schizophrenic.

Beyond the narrow streets
are the regal highways of power.
Those who pursued wild hunt
among ruined habitats,
foreign faces of invasion,
they remain in safe recluse
of painted pictures on
the walls of protected palaces.

Terror of the mighty,
condescension of the queen mother,
sacred mantle of advisers,
beaming smiles of the beautiful,
young lads of royal blood,
lavish scenes of justice dispensation,
imperious meeting of the wise,
haughtiness of the commandant,
hidden eyes of the traitor,
bowed shoulders of the natives-
all are jostling in the paintings.

Would they be wrangling,
during night hours after
the din of tourists,
on conquests left incomplete?

Its not in regal highways
but in narrow streets and
sad facades of painted lives
that the city fights dementia.

*(Written in memory of a trip to Kolkata. Unlike other metros in India, where the cityscapes create slums and forgets the past, Kolkata seems to keep the past in tact: you enter a narrow street right from the highway and, in a moment you are right in 18th or 19th century, nothing changed much, those multi- storied Victorian buildings standing tall, exuding smell of antiquity, still fully occupied. Kolkata was the capital of British- India. Here antiquity is not a matter of experience-in-imagination, it's just a tangible thing.)

WHAT REMAINED AFTER THE FLOOD DAYS

WHAT REMAINED AFTER THE FLOOD DAYS
In the mountains,
in the fog of mystic presences,
in the low blowing winds
wherein that calm ancestral breath
whistles beyond lives,
in the prickly bushes of survival
for generations of living species,
in the stone rubbles wherein
lurks the danger of snakebites,
in the bathing spots that keep in store
the icy cool and fish' kisses
while bursting forth and steep,
in the trees standing tall
with sky-revealing hollow bowels,
in the tempting cliff ends
of steep inclines deep enough
to shed the nest of life
with a single leap forward-
we had been here on a holiday
traversing narrow walks
of rustic breweries and hunting meat.
The gang of rowdy aesthetes
had vowed to frequent here
again and again.

Then, after the sighs turned storms,
and, aqua ducts into flood-makers,
after those dog days of hellish scenes,
now no one comes by.

Those herd of deers, visitors' delight,
have been washed away.
Lasses of wild-honey complexion
and their sires like burned earth,
have retreated to inner forests;
their unreflective fish-eyes
filled with the ambers of terror.

In the plains
those humble folks, with no legacies,
nestling in the streets
under the roof of the sky,
total wrecks, the dispossessed,
the heirs of those dead by water,
still undead even after outbreaks
of diseases, aftermaths of floods,
new genealogies of exodus,
whose lives were land-slided
by choleric mountain gods
and sedentary departmental gods.

We might turn up tomorrow as well.
Traversing new paths gone left and right,
passing by boulders displaced from heights
and the skeletons of hamlets,
pitying those hapless
still burning in the pyres of loss,
as guests of friends in the department,
to those fountains, where awaits
the cool and the fish-kisses,
seeking rustic breweries and hunting meat,
singing songs, reciting poems....

THIRD DAY AFTER FLOOD

THIRD DAY AFTER FLOOD

Third day of
the night of the flood-
remembrance day.

Rotting bird carcass
in the valley-
drowned god
of aerial beings.

Here's a sandalwood tree
for the village beauty
lost in the currents;

Now, a 'paala' tree
for that hussy
of wet dreams;

Freshly blooming 'champaka'
for the cute kid
wasted by waves;

Tamarind of memories
for that pregnant girl
died of terror;

a dog's burial
under that poison tree
for the thug who
terrorized all

unbecoming pyre
off barren mango tree
for the old man razed
along with his hut;

And still-
a secret burial,
unknown to the shepherd,
for the never-returning herd
under boulders displaced
from the mountains.

(Notes: Several parts of this country were recently rattled by severe floods and landslides causing tragic consequences.
'Paalamaram” is a tree supposed to possess mysterious seductive properties, housing the supernatural temptress known as “Yakshi”, who would suck the blood of her victim, after satiating her hellish lust. Sientifically named “alstonia scholaris”, it emits heavy, sleep-inducing smell at night. 'Champaka' is a sweet smelling tree of lovable properties.)
